The source of the Lágina stream lies to the west of the village of Acebo in a wide fertile valley surrounded by mountains. The Lágina trail joins various paths, resulting in a circular walk through the Colmenita, la Mata and Robledillo areas of Acebo. This area has many vegetable gardens, olive groves and orange orchards and is laced with small streams, tributaries to Lágina stream.
The trail starts in Calle la Colmenita (Colmenita Street) and climbs through olive and orange trees, two of the main crops of Acebo.
As we follow the path, oak trees begin to appear. From this point there are good views of the tangle of streets of Acebo dominated by the church. An excellent viewpoint which encompasses the essence of Acebo.
The next section of track passes through more olive and orange groves and small plots of vegetables tucked in between pine trees and oak trees. The impressive size of Mount Jálama provides a constant backdrop to the stunning scenery.
Green meadows and oak forest dominate this part of the trail, which is criss-crossed with various little streams feeding into Lágina stream. The area has a cool, fresh atmosphere, inviting us to relax and enjoy this beautiful area of Mediterranean forest.
A short stretch of cobbled lane takes us back in time to when these paths were used by horses and livestock – a bucolic scene which nowadays has all but disappeared.
But even today we can find signs that the local people had a strong connection to agriculture and livestock – there are still those who refuse to give up this way of life which was so dominant in the not-so-distant past.
We reach the Lágina stream with its riverbank forest and the highest point of the trail. From here on, we head downhill with views of Acebo village before us.
An irrigation channel showsthat once again we are in an area used for agriculture, where, for centuries, the precious water of the Lágina stream has been used to irrigate these fertile lands.
The viewpoint known as Las Tres Cruces offers stunning views of Acebo and the surrounding areas. A great stopping point for a well-deserved rest with a picture-perfect view.
